Poquessing Creek

The Poquessing Creek starts in Bucks and Montgomery Counties, and provides the boundary between Philadelphia and Bensalem, Bucks County. It is fed by several tributaries such as Bloody Run, Elwoods Run, Wilsons Run, Waltons Run, Black Lake Run, Colberts Run and Byberry Creek before it empties into the Delaware River by the Glen Foerd mansion at Grant Avenue. The Poquessing Watershed area is approximately 21.5 square miles. Stream length is approximately 6.8 miles.

History

Native American residents were part of the Turtle Clan of the Lenni Lenape (Delaware) Tribe.
The area was first settled by the Walton Brothers in 1675.
The Poquessing was included in the land grant from King Charles II to William Penn in 1680.
William Penn first came to the area in 1682.
The mouth of the Poquessing Creek was first proposed as the site for William Penn's Philadelphia, and for many years was known as "Old Philadelphia".
The name Poquessing comes from the Lenni Lenape Poetquessnink. It means "place of the mice".
Bloody Run, a Poquessing tributary located in Somerton, got its name from the wounded soldiers whose blood ran into it during the Revolutionary War.
